Abstract

The research object of this project is the Theory of Democracy developed by Norberto Bobbio. It is observed in the contemporaneity the resurgence of the conservative (and also reactionary) political-ideological content, which presents itself as an alternative to existing social dilemmas, especially in the context of the economic and social crisis observed in the Western Liberal Democracies. The particular concern of our research is: would Norberto Bobbio's formulations, concerning the transformations of democracy and its contents in the contemporary world, be enough to explain the "ascension to the past" that we are witnessing? In the mid-1980s, Bobbio argued that liberal democracy was advancing against dictatorial regimes, and that democratic transformations could not be characterized as a crisis of this regime. The hypothesis we intend to test will verify the validity of Bobbio's formulations, in his intellectual effort to characterize liberal democracy today given the socio-cultural transformations in progress. We aim to analyze the theoretical foundations of Bobbio's formulations, identifying the constitutive elements of his conceptual framework and his connection to the Neo-Kantian idealistic philosophical tradition, using a methodological tool based on the qualitative, exegetical and immanent analysis of his texts, as well as his commentators.
