Abstract

Propolis is a complex set of components collected by bees of the species Apis mellifera, as resins of numerous parts of plants, which has a high value in the international market due to the biological activities attributed to this product. Thus, it is proposed to isolate and identify the compounds present in Brazilian brown propolis collected in Angatuba-SP, as well as to obtain derivatives of the polyprenylated benzoylphloroglucinol (PP) compounds isolated from brown propolis collected in Cabo Verde-MG. The antimalarial and leishimanicidal activities of Brown Propolis and its isolated compounds will be undertaken, as well. These experiments will be conducted at the University of Mississippi at the National Center for Natural Products Research, located in the city of Oxford - United States of America, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ikhlas A. Khan. The PP compounds showed a strong activity against Leishmania amazonensis. Hence, it be will evaluate the mechanisms involved in this activity, and evaluate the tripanomicide activity of the extracts. This study will be developed at the University of California, under the supervision of Dr. Conor Caffrey. Dr. khan and Dr. Conor are international members of the thematic project on Brazilian propolis (FAPESP No. 2017/04138-8), from which this project is part. The realization of such studies will add more value to the Brazilian propolis, valuing it even more, both in the domestic market and internationally. In addition, learning new techniques directly reflects the scientific and economic development of the country, and studies with this bee product and its chemical constituents may lead in the future to the development of new pharmaceutical products from Brazil, such as food supplements, cosmeceuticals and potential new drugs from Brazilian propolis.
