We intend to explore the analysis and information, published in various newspapers in different provinces of the Empire of Brazil and in several states of the Brazilian Republic, about the banking reform outlined in the last two Imperial Cabinets, as well as that implemented in the first Republican government. In other words, our intention is to follow, in several newspapers during the period 1888-1892, when the change of the Brazilian political regime took place, the mention and repercussion in several provinces / states of discussions concerning the debate between "metalistas", like the Viscount of Ouro Preto, and "papelistas", like Rui Barbosa. We intend to analyze, also, the position adopted in the controversy by those organs of the press we studied. In short, we select ten newspapers, in which we will search manifestations favorable or discordant to the transformations related to the issuing of paper currency in Brazil. In addiction, through a dialogue with the historiography, we will investigate whether and how the positions adopted can be identified with specific existing interests - for example, from certain social groups or regions.
