Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered a public health issue due to the progressive increase of its prevalence in the world. New lines of research have suggested the involvement of inflammatory process and the microRNA (miRNA) profile in changes in body composition by regulating several transcription factors and proteins associated with adipocyte differentiation. Several factors inherent to the disease itself are responsible for increased inflammatory response, which besides contributes to renal damage, are also implicated in the muscle mass loss and adipose tissue accumulation, leading to relevant clinical conditions and adverse outcomes. To the understanding of this problematic, the investigation of miRNA expression in the plasma associated to inflammatory response increase is a promising area and it has not been investigated yet. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the association of miRNA expression profile, inflammatory biomarkers and body composition of patients with CKD, in conservative treatment and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Patients with CKD stages 5 non-dialytic and on DP will be included. Blood sample will be collected to evaluate the miRNA expression profile and 3 inflammatory biomarkers. In addition, body composition will be evaluated through the multifrequency bioelectrical impedance, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and waist circumference. Muscle function will be assessed by handgrip strength. Therefore, the association of those biomarkers expression profile will be evaluated in the subpopulations of patients with CKD in stage 5 and 5d (dialytic), in addition to their influence on body composition.
