Abstract

Resistance training is an effective method to improve various components related to quality of life and sports performance when performed chronically (i.e., after some weeks). However, an acute session of resistance exercise can generate a variety of physiological disorders, such as changes in heart rate variability (HRV) and performance on a temporary basis. All of these factors could negatively impact the quality of the next training session and possibly the adaptations of resistance training, such as strength and power development. Further, is plausible that an acute training acute session of resistance exercise for lower limbs may also impact on daily activities of practitioners through of decrease in locomotor activities for transportation, which could decrease the total daily energy expenditure and disrupt the daily personal activities of practitioners. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of strenuous acute lower limb resistance exercise on daily step numbers, performance and physiological parameters during 72 hours post. The secondary purpose is to investigate the relationship between baseline daily step numbers and changes in daily step numbers after 24h, 48h and 72 h. Finally, the third purpose is to investigate the suitability of HRV to tracking the recovery process. For this, 20 healthy men will participate in the study, which will perform a resistance exercise session for lower limbs and will have the recovery process monitored during 72 hours. The recovery parameters to be investigated will be: bar velocity during squatting, isokinetic strength, isometric strength, HRV and perception of recovery. For the comparison between methods and moments, the one-way ANOVA test will be used, whereas Pearson correlations will be used to verify the possible associations between baseline step numbers and changes in step numbers 24h, 48h and 72h post strength training session, and also between HRV variables and performance variables, as well as recovery scale. The level of significance assumed will be 5% for all analyzes.
