Abstract

The increased concentration of nutrients, from anthropic activities, has increased the eutrophication in the aquatic environments and one of the consequences of the process is the excessive growth of microalgae. During the growth of the biomass, there is the release of the organic matter commonly known as Algal Organic Matter (AOM), being released by algae due to metabolic activity and/or cell lysis. The AOM has generated consequences for water treatment, such as: reducing the efficiency of the coagulation-flocculation process and increasing the formation of disinfection by-products. Given the seriousness of the consequences of the presence of AOM and its low removal by the coagulants used worldwide, it is very important to investigate the issue. In this context, the present study aims to experimentally study the removal of AOM by coagulation-flocculation and by pre-treatments (ozonization and UV radiation), in addition to the interference of solids and microalgae present in the water supply.
