Abstract

The popularity of metal-free restorations increased with the use of zirconia because of its white color and satisfactory mechanical properties, but its opacity due its high crystalline content required ceramic veneering of copings and frameworks to reproduce natural appearance of teeth, Failures as delamination and ceramic fracture lead to search for high translucent zirconia to be used in monolithic restorations, simplifying the construction and ensuring tooth maintenance once less wear is required because of smaller thickness of restorations. Color reproduction of natural teeth using monolithic restorations requires staining techniques that allow their featuring. There are two possibilities for color reproduction of teeth using monolithic zirconia blocks: the first is using intrinsically shaded zirconia blocks at colors of VITA scale, and the second, is using high translucent zirconia blocks that are extrinsically colored before sintering. There is still the possibility of using corrective stains to adjust color of monolithic restorations after sintering. There is not a consensus about the effect of these coloring methods on color stability and surface roughness of monolithic zirconia. Additionally, the effect of toothbrushing on color stability stained by different methods is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of staining methods and toothbrushing on color stability and surface roughness of monolithic zirconia.
