Abstract

Since the first decades of the 19th century, a series of publications on the health and robustness of the children of wealthy families - medical theses, medical journals, civility manuals and drug advertisements - have come to light in the main Brazilian provinces, especially in Rio de Janeiro, the seat of the court. All these pages, roughly speaking, formulated recommendations for the good life of the Cariocas, even of their children. The research we propose intends to analyze precisely why, with what intensity and in what way the medical treatments destined to infancy, reported in medical theses, periodicals and manuals of civility of that time, proliferated in Rio de Janeiro during the nineteenth century precisely between the installation Rio de Janeiro, in 1808, and the institution of the first free course of pediatrics in Brazil in 1882. In order to apprehend the general lines of this process, we will focus the analysis of the documentation around of three themes widely worked out by doctors, and which offer a broad and detailed picture of his vision of childhood and the care that should be taken with it, namely: illness, food and clothing.
