Abstract

Similarly to most developing countries, Brazil faces several challenges regarding the inadequate management of solid waste. In Brazil, since the approval of the Law 12305/2010, the Solid Waste National Policy has been instituted, with the establishment of goals for the closure of dumpsites. Nevertheless, the majority of Brazilian cities did not conclude their management plans and the situation of dumpsites remains inconclusive, lacking research and municipal incentive for avoiding the contamination of surrounding areas. This study aims to contribute to the development of the subproject 4 of the FAPESP Thematic Project 2015/03806-1, entitled "Post-closure isolation as a measure to control the production and mobilization of pollutants of leachates from deactivated dumpsites", which monitors the saturated and unsaturated zones of an old deactivated dumpsite in São Carlos city, São Paulo state.
