Abstract

There are many evidences of adaptations in organisms due to new environments colonization. In particular, the colonization of aquatic environments allows a scenario of new lineages adaptation and diversification and appears as an important issue in evolutionary biology. This proposal aims to elucidate the colonization and subsequent diversification of species in aquatic environments by implementing a comparative approach to uncover the adaptive signals of the occupation of new environments. Using aquatic mammals as models we aim to study the selective regime of genes related to osmoregulation. We will investigate the type and differentiation level among organisms inhabiting different aquatic environments, on different temporal and taxonomic scales. We aim to clarify the evolutionary dynamics of aquatic species in relation to new habitat colonization. Moreover, we intend to understand the molecular basis of osmotic control genes evolution, which are essential components for colonization and diversification on aquatic environments. (AU)
