Contrary to traditional criticism, one starts from the hypothesis that during the first two decades of the twentieth century, in the then capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, there was a strong and powerful theatrical production focused on drama. For this purpose, two sets of pieces selected by a Commission of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and intended to be represented on the stage of the Municipal Theater in the national seasons of the years 1910 and 1912 are used as research object. As materials the chronicles and comments present in newspapers and other printed works of the time, as well as the reports and records found in the first works around the history of the Brazilian Theater, are discussed. From previous studies, the potentiality of these experiences is shown to produce consistent results on the discussions about state and society relations with the theater. It is, in short, the analysis and reflection of a period in which the genesis of the debates about the role of the State in relation to theatrical production, the culture's development in society and the formation of a Modern Brazilian Theater are perceived.
