Abstract

Chronic wound are common in horses and they are difficult to heal. Often the area is extensive and due to the poor elasticity of the skin or site hit, such as limbs, it is necessary to use grafts to recover an injury. This cases in horses, commonly, can evolve to formation of exuberant granulation tissue, which impairs healing and need a large amount of dressing changes. If treatment costs are high and recovery time is too long the owner can chose by euthanasia, that's why is necessary to shorten the time of treatment and costs. The use of amniotic and pericardium as biologic membranes is common in routine HOVET USP and presents good results. However these materials are difficult to get, store and can be easily contaminated by microorganisms which limits use to the hospital routine. Tilapia Skin can be an alternative in this cases if it shows a similar or better effect. Its easy to get, has low coast and can be storage in sterile casing. Tilapia skins is rich in collagen tip one, essential and non essential amino acids, antibacterial and anti fungal proprieties which can collaborate to avoid use antibiotic therapy systemic or local, what contributes to decrease bacterial resistance. Skins used in this project are donated by Dr. Edmar Maciel from University of Ceará and goes throw rigorous sterilization processes since this material is used in burn wounds in humans. Horses present wound that can not being sutured will receive tilapia skins curative. Bandages will be changed every 7 days. Blood will b collected for CBC and fibrinogen measure. Animals will be sedated and receive local anesthesia for biopsy using 6 mm punch in transition between wound and skin. Wounds will be measure and area calculate using Image J software. The intention is to evaluate macroscopically, by histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis the role of tilapia skin in healing. These analyzes will be carried out in partnership with the laboratories linked to the professors Lilian Marques de Sá and Cristina de Oliveira Massoco Salles de Gomes, pathology department FMVZ USP. It is worth mentioning that the project was approved by CEUA FMVZ USP. (AU)
