Abstract

This proposal to renew the IC Scholarship comes as a subsequent result of the research carried out in the last 12 months with the support of FAPESP, where I set out to investigate the work of the contemporary Portuguese writer, Gonçalo M. Tavares, from the perspective of cultural reinterpretations and parodic transcontextualization (HUTCHEON, 1985), in Uma Viagem à Índia (2010). During the in-depth study of the author's bibliography, in order to map themes, styles and aesthetics, the novel Jerusalem (2006), from the tetralogy O Reino, raised great concerns about the way the author combines recurring themes within a universe that seems at first glance, alien to ours. However, madness, rationality, the body, the spirit, violence, love and war end up constituting a cast of themes that get involved in improbable ways and converge in a powerful representation of a perennial state of rapture, prostration and madness, the result of which is a breakdown of the contemporary subject. In short, the proposal for the new study of fiction by Gonçalo M. Tavares now aims to observe the possible ways in which the author, in the path of contemporary cosmopolitanism (REAL, 2012), operates an intense exercise of rationalization and figuration of identities and places occupied by the heirs of the horrors of the 20th century, in a world set in post-holocaust times.
