Abstract

Gastrotricha is a small phylum of microinvertebrates found in virtually every aquatic ecosystem in the world. Exception for the majority of the phylum's organisms, which live associated with benthos, the representatives of the Dasydytidae family present several morphological modifications that allow the peculiar habit of semi-planktonic life, associated with the periphyton. Although the daidytides have been known for over a century, little is known about their morphology, relationship and distribution. Thus, this study aims to use integrative taxonomy, with as many sources of morphological and molecular data as possible for better delimitation and identification of dasidytides, to elucidate the evolutionary history of the taxon in a perspective of total evidence, in addition to proposing a new classification totally based on phylogenetic thinking.
