Abstract

Antineoplastics is one of the least studied groups concerning environmental impact and represent specific risks to aquatic species due to their mode of action. The questions addressed in the EMPHASIS project are: 1) Do they cause eco-, geno- and cytotoxicity to ZF? 2) What is their bioconcentration potential to ZF? 3) How do they affect the microbiota in ZF? and 4) How antineoplastic exposure alter the metabolic pathway in ZF? To address those questions, the project aims at evaluating the effects of clinic antineoplastics and novel compounds with anticancer properties using in vivo and in vitro models, the potential of cell lines to serve as alternative eco-toxicological models by validating them with the use of in vivo models and to evaluate and validate the ecotoxicological effects of new potential compounds when compared to clinic ones. The Adverse Outcome Pathway approach, will provide robust information linking different organizational levels for use in regulatory risk assessment. (AU)
