Considered as a "barometer" of social, political, economic and cultural tensions and contradictions in the country (Ginway, 2004), Brazilian science fiction provides an interesting and eloquent interface for the investigation of national memory and identity, with its multiple cultural crossroads and mixed feelings towards modernity and Western values. The main purpose of this project is to provide a critical history of science fiction in the Brazilian film and audiovisual industry, scrutinizing the main trends, traits and peculiarities that have shaped the genre in an allegedly "exotic" national environment - and vice-versa. This is the first comprehensive study of Brazilian science fiction cinema in English, a film production oftenoverlooked by conservative film scholars. Being part of a global wave of rejuvenation of science fiction based on innovative contributions by non-Western filmmaking, Brazilian science fiction cinema is also rapidly growing, gaining broader visibility and presenting alternative routes to international science fiction film as a whole. This project consists of a revision of my doctoral dissertation, published in Brazil by Devir Editora, resulting in a book to be submitted to an American university press (SUNY Press), aiming at a broader international readership.
