Abstract

This research project aims to analyze the intellectual sociability in the city of Recife during the years 1946 - 1964, as well as the perception of the underdevelopment as a social and cultural experience. The present research will be based on the vision of a given intellectual elite about the social and economic underdevelopment of the Brazilian Northeast region. For that, a wide documentary corpus will be used. These documents belong to the main institutions among those which have organized discussions and projects about the underdevelopment in Brazil's Northeast region; they are: Instituto Joaquim Nabuco de Pesquisas Sociais, Universidade do Recife e Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste. Furthermore, we will also analyze a wide documentation from the Movimento de Cultura Popular do Recife as well as the cultural section from the following newspapers: Jornal do Comércio e Diário de Pernambuco. Based on this corpus, we will try to understand what was the role of this left wing intellectual elite in the construction of a historically meaningful cultural network in Brazil. By choosing this approach, we're faced with the following questions: is it possible to infer a common profile from these intellectuals in this half century period in Recife? What was their role in the revolutionary and reformist projects of the fourth republic? Can they be considered a counter-elite due to their cultural production? A prosopographical approach of these groups of intellectuals will shape this political history. (AU)
