Abstract

Chronic exposure in aversive situations is reported as an important factor involved in the etiology and development of various diseases. Endocannabinoid neurotransmission is implicated in modulating behavioral and physiological responses to stress. In this sense, inhibition of enzymes caused by endocannabinoid degradation is proposed as a potential new therapeutic approach for stress complications. However, brain screening related to the effects of these drugs is still poorly understood. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) is described as a nucleus in behavioral and physiological responses to emotional stress, and an endocannabinoid neurotransmission is related as an important local neurochemical mechanism that is being used. Morphological changes, including increased area volume and dendritic remodeling, were identified in rodent BNST after chronic exposure to aversive events. Thus, our proposal in the present study is to investigate or treat pharmacological treatment with anandamide hydrogen inhibitor in behavioral responses related to anxiety and morphological changes in BNST, induced by exposure to a chronic unpredictable stress protocol.
