Abstract

This research project has the objective to investigate the occurrence of infection by Giardia spp. by parasitological and molecular methods. A total of 200 fecal samples will be collected from 10 properties involved in the study. For detection of Giardia spp. cysts, feces will be examined by the Faust technique. Subsequently, the images will be analyzed by the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method for amplification of the small subunit of the ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. All positive samples from this gene will be characterized for partial amplification of beta-giardin, glutamate dehydrogenase and triose-phosphate isomerase genes. The Kappa correlation coefficient will be calculated to analyze the agreement index between the results obtained in the diagnostic methods employed, and the McNemar test to compare the proportion of positive results of the techniques performed. The analysis of the results of this study will be performed by descriptive and inferential statistics. (AU)
