Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate an underground electronic dance music scene in Berlin. The main actors in the scene are collectives of artists, DJs, musicians and performers, many of whom are LGBTQ people. The collectives promote parties aiming to create safe spaces for the expression of gender and sexual diversity, as well as freer relations with time, body and pleasure. At a times when conservatism in Europe and Germany is rising, the scene is becoming increasingly politicized and represents a focus for resistance for non-normative bodies. In this sense, it is also producing new forms of locality in the city. The scene has a strong connection with a similarly effervescent scene in São Paulo, which is part of the main post-doctoral research, and for this reason it offers a unique window onto the production of bonds at a translocal level.
