Abstract

Preliminary results from the ongoing FAPESP funded Ph.D. project 2018/14974-0 indicated that Amazonian floodplain and forest soils have distinct methane (CH4) emission and sequestration potential in response to flooding conditions. In addition, we observed an increase in the abundance of methanogens in response to warmer conditions. Given the great importance of floodplains soils in the context of climate change, it is essential to improve our understanding of the environmental factors that modulate the CH4 cycling in tropical floodplains and their association with other microbial communities. The sulphur (S) cycling microbes are of particular importance, since they may present ecological interactions with methanogens and methanotrophs. Therefore, the main objectives of this internship proposal are i) to analyse and integrate the quantitative and metataxonomic datasets obtained in Study 1 and 2, developed under FAPESP project 2018/14974-0; and ii) unravel the active and metabolic traits of type I and II aerobic methanotrophic bacteria in response to volatile organic S compounds. Lastly, the dimensions of the Ph.D. project and this internship proposal will be integrated to investigate the dynamics of CH4 and S cycles, and to understand the responses of related microbial communities to seasonal events and future global warming scenarios in Amazonian floodplains. This proposal is a collaboration between the Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (Netherlands), under the joint supervision of Prof. Dr. Tsai Siu Mui and Dr. Paul Bodelier.
