Abstract

In veterinary practice, the concept of the Canal Flare Index (CFI) has been used as a tool to assist the surgeon in the planning of cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA), and this index is determined by preoperative radiographs. During radiographic positioning, variations in hip extension and femoral rotation affect the relative magnification of the femur along its length. Thus, the radiographic positioning used to obtain craniocaudal femoral radiography may influence the calculation of the CFI, making it difficult to choose the most appropriate surgical technique. The present study aims to compare the values of CFI obtained in standard craniocaudal radiographs (ventrodorsal with the caudal extension of the pelvic limbs), craniocaudal with horizontal radiographic beam and craniocaudal with the femur positioned directly over the radiographic cassette showing the influence of femoral positioning in relation to the radiographic cassette. Will be used 23 canine cadavers, the right and left femurs will be considered as experimental units, totaling a sample size of 46 femurs. All specimens will be x-rayed by the same team in two different positions. Then the femurs will be dissected and positioned directly over the radiographic cassette. Using the different radiographic images, the CFI will be calculated by three evaluators and the results will be statistically analyzed using the R software. (AU)
