Abstract

The wind pattern in an oceanic basin is one of the most important driving mechanisms of waves, impacting directly important human activities, such as shipping and oil exploration. Therefore, the study of extra-tropical cyclones and their relation with extreme wind-wave events are crucial to manage coastal and ocean activities safely, both in present and in future perspective. This document is a post-doctorate fellowship planning summary that aims to analyses the impact of extra-tropical cyclones in extreme wind-wave events in present and projected climate as part of the project Extreme wind-wave modeling and statistics in the Atlantic Ocean (EXWAV) developed in a partnership between University of Sao Paulo (IAG-USP) and the University of Lisbon (CENTEC-IST). The activities proposed include produce a climatology of extreme extra-tropical cyclones; create a classification to the extreme cyclones according to their impact in wave generation and their association to extreme wind-wave events and; evaluate changes in extreme cyclones in climate projection and estimate possibly changes in wind-wave pattern in the Atlantic Ocean.
