Abstract

Since ancient times, the East and its peoples have been object of the Western eye, which set the development of otherness relationships between the peoples of those regions when talking about this "other". The Greco-Persian Wars (490-479 BC) changed the otherness relationship, making possible for us to observe in the sources of the fifth century how Greeks passed to handle with this "other", the persian in focus, who became the image of barbarian, in a polarity that marked the difference between them. The persian otherness rhetoric represented queens, princesses, prostitutes, priestesses and concubines, frequently presented as cruel, futile, controlling, in conspiracy and responsible for the decline of the achaemenid empire, from which we can access the woman's place in the Greek moral. The present research proposes the study of how the Greek represented the persian women for themselves, in Herodotus' Histories and material culture, in accord with the studies about otherness and gender, searching for how the feminine was inserted in the otherness rhetoric and what it can tell us about the woman in the Greeks society.
