Abstract

The late-1990's represent a paradigm shift for Mallarmean Studies - the poet's documentation is finally made available in full and a metacritical posture toward his oeuvre's reception rises in the horizon. As we give this change a thought, we can as well question the absence of a (re)translation approach within the most recent international debates regarding Mallarmé. To do so, a first step would look closely to the works composing this new paradigm - works distinguished, as we suppose, by a presence of Mallarmé's usage and thoughts on the ideas of crisis and relation. A second step would then consist of showing how (re)translation - a rich place for discussing relation and crisis, - could offer a powerful toolbox to read the poet's works in the present context of Mallarmean Studies. (Re)translation for we may consider the wider range of Translation Studies, or, more locally, the retranslation research. Last, as this hypothesis seems to call for a work that follows what it predicates, a final step would search to explore ways of (re)translating Mallarmé into Portuguese in our time, task that requires two mandatory jobs: the analysis of mallarmean's (re)translation field in Brazil and the elaboration of a (re)translation for the conference-critical-poem Music and Letters, partially unprecedented in our language. In a few words, what we propose here is to investigate how we read and how we could get to read Mallarmé's critical-poetic prose in this 21st Century.
