Chitosan has properties such as biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, biodegradability and antimicrobial activity and has been applied as drug delivery vehicle in Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR), dentifrices, glass ionomer cements, adhesive systems and tissue regeneration scaffolds. Its incorporation in dental adhesives, due to its bioactivity, has the potential to generate an adhesive system with better physicochemical properties that can interact with dental tissues and improve interface stability. Thus, the aim of this project is to develop a two-step self-etching adhesive system with bioactive properties, in order to reduce the adhesive interface degradation (whether material or dental tissue) and, consequently, increase the clinical longevity of adhesive restorations.
