Abstract

The rise of demand for wireless data transmission services, the incorporation of IoT in 5G networks and the scarcity of spectrum in low frequencies (i.e., VHF e UHF) has forced the development of communication systems at millimeter wave bands. The approach adopted proposes an electromagnetic study of rectangular patch antennas operating under high order modes. The goal is to modify the current density distribution on the patch to increase gain and reduce lateral lobes, without increasing the antenna area. The work begins with designing a conventional patch antenna (i.e., operating in the dominant mode TM01) fed by a coaxial probe. By inserting slots for surface current density redistribution, the antenna will be modified to operate in TM03 and TM05 modes. Electromagnetic analysis of the devices will be performed using the Ansys Eletrontic Desktop software, HFSS module (High-Frequency Structure Simulator) using FEM (Finite Element Method). Finally, a prototype will be built and its performance evaluated by characterizing the radiation pattern and return loss. (AU)
