Abstract

The improvement of diagnostic methods and the implementation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) raised life expectancy and reduced opportunistic infections of people infected by HIV. However, a good adhesion to ART is necessary for that to happen, which is connected to how the patient understands the disease, how the diagnosis was told, whether there are people who can give support, the social barriers faced during life and the psychological influence of the diagnosis for this person. The main goal of the study is to understand the psychosocial experience of HIV infected patients. It is a qualitative research with HIV infected patients who receive clinical attention at Serviço de Ambulatórios Especializados de Infectologia "Domingos Alves Meira" (SAEI-DAM), in the city of Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. An interview will occur with each participant, using as base the guiding question: 'how have been your experiences with HIV/aids? The interview will be transcript and analyzed based on the Grounded Theory, which define the sample by theoretical saturation. The experience will be interpreted by Symbolic Interactionism. (AU)
