Abstract

The network flow method has wide application in several areas of system optimization. Particularly, this method has been used for some decades in power system problems to calculate the optimal power flow when studying systems expansion. This project intends to present the evolution of the previous developments for three applications in electric power systems: direct current optimal power flow, direct current optimal power flow as optimization of transmission element losses and alternating current optimal power flow, which purports to be a complete model. An example system of five bars detailing is used to illustrate each of the mathematical formulations. The results found for the different models, applied to the IEEE 33 bar system, are discussed and compared regarding their suitability for specific applications and finally a detailed performance analysis of the DC model, with full representation, with the optimization model. by Newton-Raphson.
