Abstract

Emerging and reemerging viruses transmitted by arthropods (arboviruses) have always been a global concern for human health. In recent years, Brazil was affected by a wave of severe epidemics, overlapping viruses, most notably caused by the viruses Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue and yellow fever, which resulted in considerable morbidity, mortality and major public health concerns.However our understanding of these outbreaks is hampered by the challenge of clinical diagnosis coupled with a limited availability of laboratory diagnostics. A precision diagnostic and a rapid and adequate disease surveillance systems are fundamental to prepare to or even prevent new outbreaks.Continuing a highly productive collaboration between the University of São Paulo, the University of Birmingham that has already resulted in very high impact publications regarding the epidemiology of Zika, Chikungunya and yellow fever, (Faria et al. 2017; Quick et al. 2017; Faria et al. 2018), this project aims to use portable genomic technologies to characterization of known viruses and the discovery of new ones and make a comparison between different sequencing protocols in a broad of samples types looking for the bestapproach to be used during an epidemic, regarding sensitivity, complexity and costs. This methodologies will be validated in field, using a mobile laboratory suitcase that comprises all equipments and consumables to investigate pathogens during an epidemic. This work will have an immediate impact on the surveillance of arboviruses in Brazil and our understanding of this pressing public health problem. (AU)
