Abstract

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who start dialysis undergo metabolic and hemodynamic stresses, hypercatabolism related to dialysis treatment, inflammation, among others. In addition, CKD can also have a negative impact on patients' functional capacity, aggravating the loss of function and muscle mass. Thus, these patients are vulnerable and have an increased risk of protein-energy wasting. The aim of this project is to evaluate the association of muscle mass and function with functional capacity of patients with CKD in peritoneal dialysis (PD). This is a cross-sectional study that will include adult individuals with CKD incident in PD. Assessment of muscle mass, function and functional capacity will be performed and patients will be characterized for demographic, clinical and laboratory data. In the statistical analysis, the patients will be divided into two groups and compared. To evaluate the association between muscle mass and function with clinical parameters and functional capacity, logistic regression will be employed. The significance level considered will be p <0.05.
