Abstract

The monitoring of concrete structures is indispensable to ensure safety and performance during its lifetime. The analysis of concrete elements is usually performed by means of destructive and non-destructive tests. The second one has the advantage of preserving the properties of the analyzed elements. Among the non-destructive tests, ultrasonic tests have been used to identify concrete anomalies. In the current project, we proposed the identification of concrete voids in digital images generated by ultrasonic tomography. The use of interpolation techniques was indicated in order to provide additional data to the ultrasonic tests and provide the generation of images that might represent the defects introduced in the specimens. In this auxiliary project, we aim to use a new approach to segment the regions of interest of the images (regions where there are defects) and obtain a data set of reference images (Ground Truth) for comparison and quantitative validation of results. Therefore, we propose a two-month internship with the intention of taking advantage of the opportunity to have the supervision and guidance of researcher Jónatas Valença, from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon. His support as an expert in concrete analysis as well as his experience with image processing might be essential to complement the analysis of results. Thus, the experience will enable more robust results through research and analysis done jointly with the support of the researcher Valença and IST. (AU)
