Abstract

Titanium aluminides are intermetallics materials with low density and high specific strength. This particular characteristic allows them to potentially substitute Ni-based superalloys. However, processing of these materials is a limiting factor since it is only achieved at considerable costs. Consequently, in this context, alternative processing methods such as powder metallurgy become quite attractive. Powder metallurgy offers the advantage of fine and homogeneous microstructures that are also segregation free as well as the possibility of near-net shape, which can reduce production costs significantly. Despite the interesting advantages, powder metallurgy processing of titanium aluminides requires specific alloy modifications in order to facilitate consolidation through sintering. Therefore, this research project aims at investigating the sintering behavior of binary Ti-Al with additions of Co and Ni to obtain ternary Ti-Al-Co and Ti-Al-Ni alloys. These alloying elements can potentially facilitate sintering and consolidation.
