Abstract

In the context of hydrological risks, floods are natural disasters that directly affect thepopulation, with far-reaching effects that hit the environmental and socio-economic systems. In this regard, the study of floods, which are natural and periodic processes in watercoursestriggered by rains, is increasingly necessary, since knowing the dynamics of natural andanthropic attributes is fundamental to understand the municipality's socio-environmental dynamics and the challenges that municipal management and the river basin committees involved face toward flood hazards. Considering the above, this project aims to analyze the socio-environmental vulnerability to floods in Piracicaba-SP, a municipality with a great recurrence of the phenomenon. Therefore, a systemic approach is proposed, relating thenatural and social attributes of the municipality. This allows the analyzes of the basin plans and situation reports of the basins that have their contribution area in the municipality and the municipal master plan to identify planned measures for flooding episodes. It also enables to identify susceptive areas to floods; trace the socio-demographic profile of the population exposed to the risk of flooding in the study area; create a socio-environmental vulnerability index; map the socio-environmental susceptibility and vulnerability to floods in the census tracts and the in the land use and land cover of the municipality.
