Abstract

In recent years, several countries have reported high concentrations of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs), including arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in soils and sediments. Part of the origin of this contamination is related to the mining activity, due to the production of large amounts of tailings, which are important source of PTEs for the environment. In situ remediation by means of the addition of organic conditioners such as bio-carbon is an alternative to resume contaminated soil quality, as it promotes the immobilization of EPTs and thus reduces the risks associated with these pollutants. The effect of the bio-carbon is closely linked to the pyrolysis temperature for its production. Under soil reducing conditions, there are changes in the biogeochemical processes that govern the dynamics of EPTs, especially those that undergo oxidation and that present strong interaction with oxides and organic matter. The evaluation of the PTE dynamics is more complete when one understands the influence of the synergism of the microorganisms associated with organic sources and the geochemical interaction of the other soil chemical elements with the PTEs. In this project we intend to evaluate (i) the effect of the pyrolysis pyrolysis temperature under the availability of As and Pb over time; (ii) the influence of the addition of bio-carbon on the dynamics and remediation of As and Pb in contaminated soil; (iii) the effect of biochar in the enzymatic activity of soil microorganisms; (iv) if different pyrolysis temperatures affect the leaching of As and Pb, and identify the main leached species; and (v) the effect of different biochar pyrolysis temperatures on the availability of As and Pb in soil under reducing condition.
