Abstract

Fires are a global phenomenon and a major source of emission of trace gases and aerosols into the atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate such emissions accurately and assess fire emission mitigation opportunities. Among drivers that influence the accuracy of fire emissions estimate we have land use and land cover, since emission factors are land use and land cover based. Considering the Brazilian territory, most of fire emissions are concentrated in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, however, there is not an emission inventory based on orbital data considered as reference in these biomes. This project proposes to update land use and land cover in the PREP-CHEM-SRC pre-processing tool and to estimate PM2.5µm fire emissions in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes using this tool, to compare such estimates with global emissions inventories and to assess the accuracy of the estimates in these biomes. It is also proposed to analyze the interannual and intrannual variation of PM2.5µm fire emissions in the Amazon biome and to quantify the reduction in such emissions resulting from the fire management techniques applied in protected areas of the Cerrado biome. It is expected that the development of this project defines the impact of land use and land cover on the estimate of PM2.5µm fire emissions and which emission inventory better represent fire emissions in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, as well as to comprehend the variation of such emissions in the Amazon biome and to show that the fire management techniques are effective at reducing fire emissions in the Cerrado biome.
