Abstract

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a technique that promotes modulation of neural activity with direct application of low-intensity electrical current to target brain areas. TDCS has been used as a relevant intervention in the treatment of patients with neurological diseases and movement disorders. Its effects are known to enhance sensorimotor and cognitive recovery when stimulation is combined with other therapeutic alternatives, such as the use of virtual reality and robotic therapy. In order to improve the rehabilitation of neurological patients, BRAINN is investing in the development of new technologies and in the association of therapies. Research on the creation of exoskeletons coupled to robotic gloves can be used as a tool for assistance and rehabilitation for neurological patients. The combined use of exoskeleton with robotic glove and functional electrical stimulation (FES) aims to promote the recovery of sensorimotor function, assist movement and promote progress in the rehabilitation process of patients with physical limitations and impaired functional capacity. In this context, the objectives of the research project to be developed with BRAINN are to investigate the combined effects of tDCS associated with neurorehabilitation techniques (robotic devices and virtual reality tools) using fMRI and other assessment methods, and to compare the pre and post-treatment on neural activity, motor excitability, electrical muscle activity and sensorimotor function. This project is linked to the BRAINN subproject "Study and development of assistive and rehabilitation technologies for neurological patients", coordinated by Prof. Gabriela Castellano.
