Abstract

Apical periodontitis is a persistent inflammation in the tissues of the peri-apex of teeth with necrotic pulp. The host's inflammatory response, seeking to suppress microorganisms, intensifies the process, generating tissue damage. Many studies look for ways to promote immunomodulation and a known strategy is physical exercise. Physical activity is able to sensitize the immune system, making the body less vulnerable to inflammation and infections. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects and influence of swimming exercise on apical periodontitis, developed in rats, analyzing the inflammatory profile of the lesion. Twenty male wistar rats will be divided into 2 groups of 10 rats each: group C + PA and group T + PA. The protocol will take place in two stages: adaptation to the aquatic environment and training. Apical periodontitis will be induced on the 28th day and the rats will be sacrificed on the 58th day, administering an overdose of anesthetic. The lower molars will be collected and processed for histological analysis with hematoxylin-eosin. The collected data will be tabulated and analyzed statistically in the SigmaPlot 12.0 program (Systat Software Inc., San Jose, USA) at a significance level of 5%.
