Effects of botulinic toxin type A on treatment of migraine: review of systematic reviews

Abstract

Migraine is a neurovascular disorder that is characterized by repeated headaches, resulting in a reduction in the quality of life due to disabling pain. This clinical condition affects about 15% of the world's population, representing a serious public health problem. Botulinum toxin type A (BTx-A), has become widely used for the treatment of migraines. Objective: The objective of this review is to map, summarize and critically evaluate the systematic reviews on the effects (benefits and risks) of BTx-A for the treatment of migraine. Methods: All systematic reviews of randomized clinical trials on the use of TxB-A for the treatment of chronic migraine will be included. Searches will be conducted in electronic databases: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) (via Wiley),Cochrane Skin Group Specialized Register, MEDLINE (via Pubmed), and LILACS(Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, via VHL) and Embase (via Elsevier). All outcomes presented in the reviews will be analyzed. The systematic reviews identified will be evaluated by two authors, independently, regarding the methodological quality through the tool AMSTAR-2 (Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews). The results will be presented narratively, considering the quality of the studies evaluated by AMSTAR-2 and the presence of PRISMA items, to verify the quality of the publication.
