Abstract

Some subjects which have not yet been studied or not clarified in the bioelectrochemistry field have an immediate impact on the development and use of energy bioconversion and fuel bioelectrosynthesis technologies. They include: halide inhibition of the multi-copper oxidases enzymatic activity towards the molecular oxygen reduction reaction and the mechanism of the reverse reaction (H2O oxidation) catalyzed by these enzymes. Therefore, this project aims to answer such questions using electrochemical techniques coupled with spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy), since they provide electrochemical control over the system by modulating enzymatic activity, while structural and electronic changes of the active sites are monitored. Understanding the aforementioned issues has an immediate impact on the development of more robust biocathodes for biofuel cells, in obtaining effective bioanodes in water splitting systems for H2 generation and can contribute to the conception of three-dimensional interactions existing in the enzymatic microenvironment for the development of effective biomimetic catalysts.
