Abstract

In recent years, studies have shown that omega 3 (n-3 PUFA) supplementation could be associated with increased rates of muscle protein synthesis, which may contribute to the greater gain in muscle mass and strength chronically. However, unlike studies with the elderly, studies in adults are contradictory. While some observe greater gains in muscle mass and strength in response to supplementation in healthy adults, others do not demonstrate these effects. Thus, there is a possibility that, in conditions where protein synthesis is maximized (i.e., healthy adults submitted to physical exercise and optimal protein intake), there is no additive effect of n-3 PUFA supplementation on muscle hypertrophy. Yet, there are no studies in the literature that have tested the effectiveness of N-3 PUFA supplementation in gaining muscle strength and mass under these conditions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of n-3 PUFA supplementation in gaining muscle mass and strength in healthy adults undergoing strength training with different protein intakes. For this purpose, a clinical, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study will be carried out with 45 male subjects, from 18 to 40 years old. Participants will be divided into four groups in the proportion of 2: 1: 2: 1: High protein intake (1.6 g / Kg / d) + Omega 3 (3 g / d); High protein intake + placebo (3g / d soybean oil); Low protein intake (0.8 g / kg / d) + Omega 3; and Low protein intake + placebo. The protocol will last 12 weeks, during which all participants will perform strength training for lower limbs (2x / week). Before and after the protocol, participants will be assessed for maximum strength (1-RM leg press), body composition (DXA) and thickness of the vastus lateralis muscle (ultrasound). In addition, food consumption will be monitored every four weeks through 24-hour recordatories. (AU)
