Abstract

The research project intends to study the position occupied by metaphysics in the late philosophy of Theodor W. Adorno, exposed in particular in the chapter "Meditations on metaphysics" of the book Negative Dialectic. According to the project's hypothesis, the necessary decadence indicated by Adorno in metaphysics is an essential element in the formulation of his Critical Theory, something expressed in a synthetic way in the formulation that his thought is "solidary with metaphysics at the moment of his fall". The project intends to discuss this position of solidarity with metaphysics through the combination of two strategies: 1) to present the antiquated character of metaphysics in Negative Dialectic, notably by reconstruction of the Adornian confrontation with Kantian critique of metaphysics in a historical context marked by the experience of Auschwitz; 2) and show how the concepts of truth and immanent criticism, essential to Critical Theory, imply a critical reference to metaphysics.
