Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) recommend that breastfeeding be started in the first hour of life, be exclusive until the age of six months and complementary until two years old. This practice generates benefits on maternal and child health, to the economy and to the environment. Despite this, international and national surveys that have analyzed breastfeeding rates over the years, highlight the need to implement new strategies, policies and programs to improve breastfeeding indicators. Strengthening social support is one of the main strategies identified by WHO and UNICEF to increase breastfeeding rates. This should be offered by any member of the woman's social network during prenatal, delivery and postnatal. The presence of a companion in the delivery room is a form of social support and may be associated with early indicators of breastfeeding. However, the literature on this topic is scarce, and it is relevant to investigate it. Objective: To study the association between companions in the delivery room and early indicators of breastfeeding in a cohort of pregnant women and infants. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of data from a cohort study of pregnant women assisted in the primary health care network. These were followed up until delivery and the first childcare consultation of the newborn during the period from May 2018 to June 2019. Data collected from the maternity and health unit records will be used, where the pregnant woman from the cohort , already a mother, was attended with her infant for the first childcare consultation and to carry out newborn screening tests. The presence or absence of a companion in the delivery room and association with the outcomes investigated in relation to breastfeeding will be investigated (breastfeeding in the first hour of life; skin-to-skin contact immediately after delivery; exclusive breastfeeding on leaving the maternity hospital; consumption of other milk than breast milk when leaving maternity; exclusive breastfeeding at the first childcare visit; consumption of other milk, than breast milk at the first childcare visit). The investigation of the association between the companion presence and the investigated outcomes will be carried out by univariate and multivariate regression analyzes, with the entire analysis plan being prepared with the University's research support office.
