Abstract

This project aims to start a study in Scientific Initiation in the area of Portuguese Literature. Therefore, illuminated in the light of the eighteenth century and its rhetorical and poetic aspects, in view of the impact of the aggiornamento cultural promoted by Marquês de Pombal in Portuguese letters, the research aims to study the technical characteristics that make up the epic, as well as to give the sublime an important mark in the stylistic construction of the poem, its effects and its purposes. Thus, the work is divided into three moments that dialogue with each other in the thematic unit of research: at first, the epic is discussed, doing a gender study, situating the Caramuru in the tradition. In the second moment, the sublime is put into evidence, recovering its appearance in Portugal, its relationship with the teaching of the new 18th century rhetoric and its function as a rhetorical technique, exploring its formal characteristics. In the end, the work focuses on the study of the epic and the use of the sublime as a stylistic aspect of the work in question. Through the analysis itself, the research attempts to understand how this relationship between the epic genre and the sublime takes place, both high shapes in the literary tradition and rhetoric in their respective, which merge into the heroic poem by Rita Durão.
