Abstract

The use of yeasts to obtain several bio-based products are gaining more importance nowadays, especially due to the diversity and since it is considered a natural source of a wide variety of carotenoids, proteins, lipids, among others, with several applications in food, nutritional, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and fuel industries. Astaxanthin, is a powerful antioxidant with high commercial value, belonging to carotenoids of xanthophyll class; produced by the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma that has aroused great industrial interest due to the antioxidant potential (about 10 times more effective than ²-carotene) and possible role to reduce the risk of some chronic diseases such as: cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration and several types of cancer. Thus, due to the growing of carotenoids world market and high cost of astaxanthin produced synthetically there is a great interest in the production of this carotenoid by biotechnological route. However, to obtain through this route is crucial to develop more biocompatible and environmentally friendly extraction and purification procedures, which guarantee not only the sustainability of industrial processes but also the biological activity of the molecules recovered from microbial. In this way, in our scientific proposal we propose to evaluate the technical-scientific feasibility of an integrated system for the extraction and purification of astaxanthin using physical and/or chemical methods with green solvents acquired from renewable sources (biosolvents, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents) for the development of a sustainable, less expensive and biocompatible platform that integrates the basic principles of a circular economy.
