Abstract

The research proposes to study actions and discussions carried out in the heritage field that guided the process, still underway, of São Paulo coffee farms patrimonialization. For this purpose, three lines of continuity will be taken as a basis in which the farms are evident, sometimes because they are absent and sometimes because they are highlighted: the discussions and actions that have taken place in the preserve's institutions of Brazilian and São Paulo cultural heritage (IPHAN and Condephaat, respectively); the perspectives adopted on São Paulo coffee farms in academic research; and, finally, the actions taken by governments, universities and civil society that had as their object those rural spaces. The process of São Paulo coffee farms patrimonialization has been shown to be a interaction product of these continuities that have occurred since the 1970s, which at times become closer, at others they move away, and, at the end, print narratives about the coffee memory, sometimes conflicting, when they do not cover the plurality of important themes of this universe. The analysis of this process will not only identify what has been prioritized and neglected throughout its occurrence, but it will also shed light on the current challenges related to safeguarding rural coffee properties. Establishing as a case study the properties Fazenda Roseira and Fazenda Mato Dentro, for the first time in studies of São Paulo coffee farms, this research aims to understand and set up a broad review about the building memory process around São Paulo coffee rural heritage, as well as the conflicts of narratives that permeate it.
