Abstract

Gastrointestinal parasites caused by helminths and protozoa are among the most common diseases in dogs and cats and can be especially serious in young or immunocompromised animals. Some of these parasites such as Ancylostoma spp., Toxocara spp., and Giardia spp. can cause infection in humans. These pathogens can cause gastroenteritis, respiratory problems, weight loss, developmental delay, and can lead to the death of dogs and cats, in addition to affecting humans. These parasitic zoonoses, despite not being a frequent cause of death in humans, cause allergies, diarrhea, anemia, expenses with diagnosis, treatment, and economic losses, such as reduced animal productivity. Considering the importance of helminth infection in dogs, both in terms of the veterinary clinics and public health, prevalence studies are necessary to establish control and prophylaxis measures. Research the frequency of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs treated at the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Santo Amaro. Considering the importance of infection of end parasites in dogs and cats, both in the aspect of the veterinary clinic and public health, studies are necessary to establish adequate control measures, in addition to allowing assessing the risk to which the animal population and human beings are exposed, humans.
