Abstract

Food processing involves the action of neurotransmitters that activate muscle cells through gap junctions, promoting peristalsis (basic propulsive uniform movement), in response to muscle distension, mechanical or chemical mucosal stimulation. Abnormal gastric emptying motility control cause malfunction in the conduction of food, leading to gastroparesis, manifested as (a) gastric stasis, (b) dyspeptic symptoms, such as postprandial fullness, early satiety, eructation, (c) weight loss, (d) and the fourth stage of gastroparesis, typical of Diabetes mellitus, cases in which there is metabolic control failure, even thought indicated therapeutic measures have been taken. Autonomic neuropathy and the loss of parasympathetic stimulation of Diabetes mellitus delay gastric emptying and decrease acid secretion. This way, gastroparesis affects the well-being and quality of life of patients with Diabetes mellitus. Objective: estimate the prevalence of diabetic gastroparesis, its intensity, and manifestations in patients under treatment of Diabetes mellitus; analyze the effects of gastroparesis on the quality of these patients' life. Method: prospective study developed at the Endocrinology Service of Specialized Outpatient Facility from Barretos, SP, analyzing patients diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus that will be submitted to questionnaires: epidemiological; gastroparesis assessment - Gastroparesia Cardinal Symptom Index (GCSI) with identification of severe digestive symptoms and WHOQOL- bref questionnaire to assess the quality of life, followed by statistical analysis for variables addressed.
