Abstract

Zirconia, when applied clinically in dentistry, is exposed to the oral environment, which makes it highly prone to superficial adhesion of biofilm and microbial proliferation. Silver has a proven antimicrobial action and, in association with zirconia, could confer some antimicrobial activity to this ceramic. If silver is applied inside a very smooth glass, it can also reduce the biofilm's surface adhesion. Therefore, the aim of this study will be to analyze the surface properties, biofilm formation and inhibition of microbial adhesion of the ultra translucent zirconia 5Y-PSZ covered by different glasses. 124 samples of UTML ultra-translucent zirconia (KATANA ", Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc, Tokyo, Japan) will be used, divided into 4 groups: ZR polished; Glazed ZR; ZR with silver glass; ZR with silver glass + glaze. The specimens will be subjected to surface roughness tests (n = 15), profilometry (n = 2), colony forming units (CFU) count (n = 8), biaxial flexion strength (n = 10) and electron microscopy of scan (n = 2). The expected result will be to prove that UTML zirconia covered with silver has less biofilm surface adhesion than glazed and polished surfaces, besides having antimicrobial activity against specific microorganisms.
