Abstract In this project I am interested in deepen the interconnections between the metaphysical notion of process and ontic structuralism - as a refined version of naturalism - focusing on the analysis of emergence (of systems and properties) and its application in grounding the ontological understanding of physical notions such as those of complex system and force field. The apparent interest of these issues is due to the relational character of systems at the quantum scale of fields, as well as at the scale of macroscopic complex systems. The relational character of natural systems of any scale means that the interactions between any (relational) system and its whole relevant environment (internal and/or external), in which the system is immersed, are essential in order to understand, represent and control the evolution of the system. Given the relational nature of process ontology approach, the connection between ontic structuralism and process ontology deserves to be emphasized and deepened. The project is, then, addressed to investigate point (II) of my original FAPESP research project, concerning the metaphysical mechanism through which the objectuality or thisness of natural entities, i.e., from particles to those of the manifest world, emerges from processes in interaction(s). The focus here is on the interactive process that stabilizes the interactions between the system and the environment, that we may call emergence via duality, making emerge new contingent entities. The original insight of this project is that the `mechanism' of emergence is governed by some duality system-environment playing the role of providing and selecting the relevant environment for the specific system, so that the emergent stability might be seen as the dual iterated determination of the relative boundaries between the (open) system and its relevant environment(s). In this view, the contingent objectuality of any natural entities would be read as the stability of the (not only mutual, but even) dual interactions at stake. Objects would then really emerge from the dynamic duality between the system and its environment. (AU) | |
